How To Build A Pallet Sign!
What better way to add to your home decor than a homemade pallet sign?! Ahh, pallet signs. The old weathered, antique look is the trend in home décor now, and I love it!
There was an awesome idea on Facebook this past weekend and I decided to create my version of it, and I’m so glad! It turned out beautiful! Just in time for Easter!
We started by picking out a pallet. NEVER, I repeat NEVER pay for a pallet. So many businesses give them away. My husband works at a manufacturing plant and I work at a door and hardware business. Between the both of us we have access to as many pallets as we need! If you don’t have access to pallets, go around to local manufacturers and distributors. There is someone who has broken or busted pallets they can’t use! Take advantage of it.
We selected a pallet we had down at our old farm that had a great weathered looked. You’ll want to use a hammer and a mallet and gently beat the boards off of the pallet. If you have another way to get the boards off without damaging them, please leave me a comment below. Be very careful, this pine will split; which is okay – it adds to the weathered look – but you don’t want it to bust.
After you pull the boards you want from the pallet you’ll line 5 of the 1x’s (1 by’s – like 1″x5′ boards) up together and placed two of the 2x’s behind to brace the boards.
The 2x’s were too long to use for the backing so we had to saw them to the size we needed.
Once you line the boards up like you want them – it’s time to nail them in. Before you nail, make sure the boards are flush at the top and the bottom. If you don’t – they will not stand up straight.
You can reuse the nails you pulled from the original pallet – they’re free & they work great!
The color of the pallet just wasn’t what I was looking for. I went to the local hardware store and bought a cream-colored spray paint. I used a very, very light coat. Just enough to make the wood just a bit lighter and add to the weathered look.
Time to make the cross. My husband cut the size of the 2x’s that we wanted to use for the cross. Next, he stained the cross using Dark Walnut. I love the color it turned out! We used screws to put the cross on the pallet since there is not good stud to nail in to.
Next, I used my Silhouette and cut out letters. I wasn’t happy how they looked. The letters didn’t adhere real good to the wood and I was afraid they wouldn’t last long. I used a paint brush and outlined the letters, then peeled them up and painted the inside of my outline. I would suggest using a stencil – or cutting your own. This is what I’ll do next time.
Overall I am very pleased with how it turned out 🙂 If I could do it over – I would use a better font that wasn’t as curvy!
