Y’all – I have had a major obsession with chunky arm knit blankets ever since I’ve laid my eyes on them!! They’re super soft, cuddly, and warm! I knew I HAD to have one of these amazing blankets. So off to research I went browsing for these amazingly soft, cute blankets, and like beautiful music playing then abruptly stopping,  I realized these blankets were over $200 for a decent sized one. I was BUMMED. So I’m going to share with you how I made my own chunky arm knit blanket – video below. That’s still soft and cuddly but not near the price tag of a 100% Merino Wool blanket.

Chunky, arm knit, blanket, DIY, do it yourself, tutorial

After I realized how much these Merino Wool blankets were, I researched alternative blankets that were similar. I learned a few things in the process. Several people who had purchased these blankets said the Merino Wool was amazingly soft; however, they couldn’t use the blanket because it would shed and leave fuzz everywhere. So basically people were spending over $200 for a blanket they couldn’t use. I knew this is not what I wanted. I didn’t want this blanket to display, but to cover up with and live in my hygge moment. (if you don’t know what hygge is – look it up. You can thank me later). One woman said she bought the $150 worth of Merino Wool to arm knit the blanket herself and ended up being out of $150 because the wool would just pull apart and she couldn’t even arm knit with it. Talk about horror story!

Through my hours of research I settled on a tutorial that taught step-by-step how to make this chunky arm knit blanket I was looking for. It was a life-saver! The yarn was only around $70-$80 instead of the original $150 (for the Merino Wool to DIY). The yarn is actually an acrylic yarn and it is still a soft, but usable yarn.

I purchased 12 balls of Premier Yarns Couture Jazz in Slate Grey at Wal-Mart online – thankfully I had a gift card to Wal-Mart, but shop around. It may be cheaper somewhere else. I used 11 balls and my blanket ended up being roughly 4 foot wide by 8 foot long. I made a tutorial myself, which you’re more than welcome to follow; however, my tutorial is not anywhere near as professional as the one I followed. If you’d like that tutorial, please leave a comment below.

Before you decide on arm knitting your own chunky arm knit blanket, I wanted to share a few tips and tricks.

When you’re knitting, keep the yarn tight around your arms. If not you’ll end up with HUGE holes. I did. But the great thing is, I made my blanket so big that I can fold it over and use it as a throw. It doesn’t seem like it would keep you warm, but the yarn is so thick that it is very warm. And when I fold it over, the holes are covered by other parts of the blanket.

I knitted 19 rows across and 37 rows down.

This blanket took me about 45 minutes to an hour to make – It took me longer because I was trying to make a tutorial while knitting.

Let me know your thoughts and comments 🙂 And if you’ve tried this – post a picture below for us to see!

A couple things you need to know about my tutorial:

1 – my 9 year old was video recording. That’s why some of the time he’s videoing the couch, lol!

2 – I “shh’d” my 9 year old and he tells me to quit telling him to shut up “insert eye-rolling here”.

3 – I look horrendous. I wasn’t really planning on showing my face in the tutorial at first, but then we had some issues and I ended up having to. So with that being said – overlook my hot-mess-mom-self. Don’t be too harsh on me 🙂 also this was after my gallbladder surgery and I had gained quite a bit of weight.

4 – look over my house – my son was on Christmas break and we stayed so busy!

5 – I hope  you’re able to enjoy this project as much as I did! I’m hoping to make another chunky arm knit blanket soon!
