Getting Rid of Those Pesky Fruit Flies

Those pesky fruit flies are driving me crazy! Every year during this time we get a swarm of flies. Not the big annoying, buzzing flies… The small, irritating, flying around everywhere, tiny flies. I’m not even sure why they call them “fruit” flies. They’re not attracted to the fruit, they’re attracted to the sink! I’ve tried everything… fly strips that leave the nasty goo if it touches anything, house spray, not leaving anything out, wiping down the counters with disinfecting wipes, etc. but they continue to multiply! Until I did this one trick.

How to Kill Fruit Flies

I used a glass jar that I bought years ago for a birthday party and put soap and water in it. They were so attracted to it!!

First I filled the container up half way with water.

Then I poured a small amount of dish washing detergent into the glass. Just enough to turn the water a yellowish color.

And voila! Almost immediately we noticed dead flies.

We went on a “mini” vacation this weekend and when we come back home – we had killed so many of these pesky fruit flies! I was so happy!

I have hardly seen any flying around the sinks or on the walls behind the sink. I’ve heard they are actually attracted to water and that’s why they stay around the sinks. So if you have any dish rags that you typically leave out or dishes in the sink, try to keep them put up as much as possible. Anything you can do to not attract these flies the better.

I have also poured vinegar and bleach down the sinks before. This seemed to help a little, but not to the point of killing them.

So next time you have these pesky flies in your house, try this simple trick to get rid of them.
