How to Grow Bleeding Hearts – Successfully!
Those gorgeous flowers – you know the ones that are heart-shaped with “tails” at the bottom? I LOVE them. Along with Morning Glories, Sunflowers, and Honeysuckles, Bleeding Hearts are my favorite flower!
I’ve always had a hard time getting this beauties to grow, though. Bleeding Hearts are my FAVORITE flower!! They’re absolutely stunning.
This non-native flower bush is gorgeous, but they’re hard to get established. They actually are native to Japan, China, & Korea. They like moist soil and mostly shaded areas.
For years I tried to get these beauties to grow and had failure after failure. My true success came when I placed them in the correct area. In front of our house.
I did research after research on placement for these flowers and almost everything I read said mostly sunny. So for years, that’s where I put them! Until I was sick of buying these flowers only to get disappointed every single time. So I decided it was time to change it up a bit, what would hurt? I had already killed 4-5 plants. I’m so glad I did!
I put them in front of our house & it shades them for most of the day and they get plenty of rain water by how our land lays.
This particular bush has done very, very well for 3 years now!
This is KEY to get these non-hardy beauts to grow! It’s also a good idea to fertilize them, but be careful not to scorch them. Read the fertilizer instructions, VERY carefully.
I bought some more flowers to set out this year, but it’s not time yet due to our location and chance of frost still.
Have you had a hard time getting Bleeding Hearts to grow? Try placing them in mostly shady, well-drained, and soil-enriched areas. This helped mine get established & flourish!
