An Open Letter To My Grandparents – Who Adopted Me
I wanted to write an open letter to my grandparents to thank you for everything you’ve done for me. You didn’t have to be a Mama and Daddy to another child, especially since you didn’t birth me. You did your rearing of children with my mother. You didn’t have to make the choice to take in a scraggler.
But I am so thankful you did.
I am so thankful for all the dirty diapers, the late night bottle feedings, the exhausting sick times, the times you kissed my boo-boos and scared the monsters out of my bedroom. For the long wagon rides with my rabbits & kittycats and the long days I spent trailing behind Papa in the garden planting vegetables. The clean, nice clothes I always had on my back and the amazing home cooked meals I was served three times a day. I’m thankful for the volunteering at my school, activities in church, and the extra-curricular activities you allowed me to play. The vacationing trips, sleepovers with my friends, and awesome summers you provided me. I’m thankful for the times I got a spanking or grounding when I was misbehaving and the times I was rewarded when I was on my best behavior. I’m thankful for being able to grow up on a farm and enjoy the simple things in life. The hard work I was able to put into having a farm and the “character building “that was put in to it. I’m thankful for my sweet, precious grandfather for giving me away to my amazing husband at our wedding. I’m thankful for my compassionate and giving grandmother for being my best friend and walking me through life.
I am so, so blessed.
Not many children get a chance to live a life with amazing and loving parents. YOU GAVE ME THAT.
You were parents when you didn’t have to be parents. You gave me a part of life that nobody could have given me and that was an abundant life.
Now with Papa having cancer and Nenaw having Dementia you say I am and always have been your blessing and God gave me to y’all. You’re wrong. I am the blessed one. I could never repay you for the love, kindness, gratitude, patience, and nurture you have showed to me in my lifetime. The best thing? You’re both my parents AND my grandparents – am I one blessed gal or what?
And you’re above and beyond the call of duty being Grandparents for my precious child. WE ARE THANKFUL & SO BLESSED!!! We thank God for both of you all the time!
So next time I’m fixing Papa’s medicine, balancing your checkbook, paying your bills, or helping you with something in the house – you’re not the one who’s blessed to have me…. I am the one whose blessed God gave me y’all.
There’s no telling where I would be in my life without you.
Thank you Mama and Daddy for rearing me. Thank you for every single thing you have ever done and will do for me, because it was more than enough & thank you for being the best great-grandparents to Hunter!
From the bottom of my heart – I. LOVE. YOU.
What a beautiful and emotional letter it left me teary. I know your grandparents are very proud of the beautiful, caring, loving women you have become. And it is so nice that you acknowledge them for their selfless contribution to your success.
Thanks Lynn ❤️
So sweet!
We’re the blessed ones Amanda to have you & Hunter in our lives. We thank God everyday for you both.
Love you!!
Thank you for sharing this. I think that your grandparents are just as lucky to have had you in their life as you are to have them. I was very close to my grandparents growing up and they have taught me so much, things I will never forget. I miss them terribly, but know that they are still with me in my heart.
