How To Help Your Child Remember Sight Words
Sight words were big in Kindergarten. It was the biggest major objective the kids had to learn!! I wasn’t going to let my little fella fall behind so we studied sight words like they were going out of style. I used several different methods that worked for him.
Each child is different so you just need to find your child’s learning style.
Picking out words from a book.
I let my son pick out his favorite book to read. Instead of actually reading the book, we went and looked for sight words and then read the sentence. He thought this was the coolest idea! He loved scouring through the pages to find the next word!
Dry Erase Board
My little man got a dry erase board the Christmas before and boy did it come in handy. We would go over the words every other night on the board. I’d let him write them up there and sometimes j would write a whole bunch of them on the board and he would have to pick out the correct words that I called out.
Note Cards
This method was definitely effective. I would write the words down on notecards and as I held them up he would call out the word. This became the method we used when he got older. It proved to be the most effective for him.
Worksheets
I found worksheets on Pinterest through this pin. It just so happened the words listed in her workbook was what my sons Hunter’s class was going over. These worksheets were a very effective method for learning sight words. It taught repetition and Hunter caught on to them a lot quicker. This is the most effective method he learned by.
Letters on the Fridge
Hunter’s had letters on his fridge since he was little. We would go over to the fridge and I’d call out a word and he would have to spell it. This method worked as well for him.
The main thing to remember when teaching sight words to your child is to be patient and make it fun. As soon as your child sees it as work, he/she won’t want to do it.
At first, sight words can seem like a daunting task. Don’t let it be! Have fun with it and your child will be learning them in no time like mine did 🙂
