One of my favorite comfort foods in the summer to fix is fried green tomatoes. We grow the juiciest green tomatoes in our garden and they are scrumptious fried! This simple recipe has few ingredients and takes about 15-20 minutes to make. Quick, easy, simple, and delicious – no wonder its one of our favorites! Restaurant fried green tomatoes are good, but I don’t like them with too much breading. This recipe lets you control how much breading you put.
Ingredients
1 cup – Cornmeal
Oil (Vegetable or Olive)
1/2 cup – Flour
1/2 cup whole milk (or buttermilk)
1 egg
Salt & Pepper to taste
Directions
1 – Mix together cornmeal, flour, salt, and pepper.
2 – In a separate bowl, mix together sweet milk (what I call whole milk) and egg.
3 – Add oil to pan and heat to medium/high heat.
4 – Cut up tomatoes into slices.
5 – Begin dipping the tomato slices into the wet ingredients to coat the tomatoes, then dip into the dry ingredients spreading the mixture all over the tomato.
6 – place a single layer of prepared slices into the skillet and cook, flipping on each side, until golden brown (or if you’re like me dark brown).
That’s it! Scrumptious fried green tomatoes in no time at all! These go great with just about any southern comfort foods!
