After buying a 34 pound watermelon I had to figure out what all I could make with this massive watermelon. After making Watermelon Jam, Watermelon Rind Pickles, Watermelon Rind Preserves, and Watermelon Candy – I found a recipe for Watermelon Jerky. Watermelon jerky is also known as watermelon candy or simply dehydrated watermelon. It’s easy to make and makes a great snack!
Watermelon Jerky is probably the easiest of all the watermelon recipes I’ve made. It took little effort and most of the time was waiting on the watermelon to fully dehydrate. It also takes little thought, lol.
The dehydrator I have is here, and I’ve had it for several years and so far it works very well!
First step in making watermelon jerky is to cut thin slices. The biggest tip I can give you for making watermelon jerky is to have your watermelon slices very thin. Watermelon has such high water content the smaller slices you make the quicker it’ll dehydrate.
Next you’ll want to arrange your slices on each tray, making sure you don’t overlap any slices.
Next you’ll turn on the dehydrator and let it do its magic! Mine took about 24 hours to fully dehydrate, but time differs for each batch. Again, it all depends on how your watermelon is sliced.
And viola! It’s done. Simple, quick, and tasty. My kind of recipe! When my 9 year old comes home from school he usually gets a slice of watermelon jerky and eats it. It tastes like candy and it’s a good treat!
After making Watermelon Jam, Watermelon Rind Pickles, Watermelon Rind Preserves, Watermelon Candy and watermelon jerky, I still had a lot of watermelon left over, unbelievably. We ended up giving the rest to our goats and donkeys, who LOVED it! I have to say, after using the entire watermelon – even the rind – it was nice to not throw any of it away.
